Yesterday on Day 8 I introduced the Moldex Contours Small and explained what makes the anatomical design so different from everything else in the Women’s Earplugs Sample Pack. Today on Day 9 I want to cover the Moldex Contours Regular – and more importantly, help you understand exactly which size is the right choice for you. Because the two are so similar in design, the most useful thing this post can do is give you a clear, practical framework for making that decision. Both sizes are included in our Women’s Earplugs Sample Pack and our Men’s Earplugs Sample Pack, so you have the opportunity to try them back to back – and I would encourage you to do exactly that.

What the Regular Shares with the Small

Before getting into the differences, it is worth being clear about what the two sizes have in common – because it is a lot. Both use Moldex’s anatomical PU foam design that follows the natural contours of the ear canal rather than imposing a geometric shape. Both use the same super-soft, ultra-light foam that seals gently without pressure. Both carry the same SNR 35dB rating, confirming that the anatomical design delivers consistent attenuation across both sizes. And both share the same low-profile seated position that makes them discreet during wear and less prone to being dislodged during sleep.

If you read yesterday’s post and the anatomical design concept appealed to you, everything I said there applies equally to the Regular. The question is simply which size fits your ear canal anatomy better.

What the Regular Does Differently

The Regular is larger in overall diameter than the Small. This means it creates a seal further out in the ear canal rather than deeper in – which suits people with average to wider ear canals where a smaller earplug would not make sufficient contact with the canal walls to form a reliable seal. For these users, the Small would sit loosely, create an incomplete seal, and deliver noticeably less noise reduction than the rated 35dB. The Regular fills the canal appropriately and performs as intended.

The Regular is also the size most likely to suit people who have previously used standard foam earplugs without sizing issues. If you have worked through the earlier posts in this series and found the 3M EARsoft Classic or the Yellow Neons roughly the right size but wanted something softer and more anatomically shaped, the Regular Contours is a very logical next step.

A Practical Guide to Choosing Between the Two Sizes

In my experience, the following indicators tend to point reliably towards one size or the other. You are likely better suited to the Small if: standard foam earplugs have consistently felt too large or difficult to insert; you have previously experienced discomfort or soreness from foam earplugs during extended wear; or you know from other products that you have narrower than average ear canals. You are likely better suited to the Regular if: standard foam earplugs have generally fitted and performed well for you; your primary motivation for trying the Contours is the softer foam and anatomical shape rather than a smaller size; or you find that smaller earplugs tend to feel loose or fall out during wear.

If you are genuinely unsure – and many people are, because most of us have never given much thought to our ear canal dimensions – the sample pack’s inclusion of both sizes is exactly what the trial process is for. Try the Small first, then the Regular, and notice which feels more naturally seated and which delivers a more noticeable noise reduction effect. Your ears will give you a clearer answer than any written guide.

SNR 35dB: The Same Strong Performance

As with the Small, the Regular delivers SNR 35dB – a high-performance rating that comfortably covers the most common everyday noise reduction scenarios. Sleeping next to a snoring partner, blocking out office noise during focused work, travelling in noisy environments, or attending loud events – 35dB handles all of these with headroom to spare. It places the Contours Regular among the stronger performers in the pack, sitting above the Laser Lite at 32dB and the Mack’s Dreamgirl at 30dB, and just below the Howard Leight MAX and 3M 1100 at 37dB.

The Moldex Approach to Earplug Design

Having now spent two days in the Moldex Contours range, it is worth saying something about Moldex as a manufacturer. The German brand takes a noticeably different approach to earplug design from the American brands that dominate much of the market. Where Howard Leight and 3M tend to lead with high attenuation ratings and industrial-scale deployment, Moldex places particular emphasis on wearer comfort, anatomical fit and extended wearability. This philosophy runs consistently through all four Moldex earplugs in the sample pack – the Contours Small, the Contours Regular, the Mellows and the Pura Fit, both of which I will cover later in the series. If comfort has always been your sticking point with earplugs, the Moldex section of this series is worth paying particular attention to.

My Verdict

The Moldex Contours Regular is an excellent earplug for anyone with average to wider ear canals who wants the benefits of anatomical design – consistent seal, minimal pressure, and comfortable extended wear – without needing a smaller size. At SNR 35dB it delivers strong performance, and the super-soft foam makes it one of the most comfortable options in the pack for prolonged use. Paired with the Small, it gives the sample pack a genuinely complete solution to the sizing question that most earplug ranges simply ignore. Both are available individually from Zoom Health and together in our Women’s Earplugs Sample Pack and our Men’s Earplugs Sample Pack.

Tomorrow on Day 10 I continue with Moldex and look at the Moldex Mellows – a softer, lower-attenuation earplug designed for situations where you need protection from noise without blocking out the world entirely.
