Yesterday I looked at the 3M EARsoft Classic – the benchmark foam earplug that most people should try first. Today, Day 2 of our 15-part series, I want to introduce you to its close relative: the 3M EARsoft Yellow Neons. On the surface these two look similar – same 3M family, same slow-recovery foam technology. But the differences in shape, softness and noise rating make them a meaningfully different earplug, and for many people the Yellow Neons actually end up being the preferred of the two. Both are included in our Women’s Earplugs Sample Pack and our Men’s Earplugs Sample Pack, which is exactly why having both in the same collection is so useful.

Tapered vs Cylindrical: Why Shape Matters for Comfort

The most important difference between the Yellow Neons and the EARsoft Classic is the shape. Where the Classic is cylindrical – uniform in diameter along its length – the Yellow Neons are tapered, narrowing towards the tip. This taper is not just aesthetic. It has a direct effect on how the earplug sits in the ear canal and how comfortable it feels over time.

A tapered earplug tends to insert more easily because the narrower tip guides the earplug into position before the wider body creates the seal. There is less of a sense of pushing something into the canal, and more of a feeling of it sliding naturally into place. For people who find insertion uncomfortable or fiddly, this is often a revelation. I regularly hear from customers who struggled with cylindrical earplugs for years and found the tapered shape a complete game-changer.

The taper also distributes pressure more evenly along the ear canal wall rather than concentrating it at a single point. Over a full working day or a full night’s sleep, that difference in pressure distribution becomes noticeable. The Yellow Neons are genuinely one of the most comfortable foam earplugs I have come across for extended wear.

A Higher Noise Rating Than the Classic

One thing that surprises people when they compare these two 3M earplugs side by side is that the Yellow Neons actually carry a higher noise rating than the Classic. The Yellow Neons are rated at SNR 33dB, compared to SNR 28dB for the EARsoft Classic. That 5dB difference is more significant than it sounds – because decibels operate on a logarithmic scale, 5dB represents a meaningful step up in protection.

To put it in practical terms: at SNR 33dB, a noisy road registering 80dB is reduced to around 47dB at the ear – roughly equivalent to a quiet conversation. For anyone using earplugs in genuinely loud environments, whether that is a factory floor, a music venue, or a snoring partner in the room, that extra attenuation is worth having.

It is worth noting, as I mentioned yesterday, that rated SNR figures assume a correct fit. With any foam earplug, technique matters as much as the product itself.

The Hypoallergenic Advantage

The Yellow Neons are manufactured from hypoallergenic foam, which makes them a particularly good choice if you have sensitive skin or have experienced irritation with other earplugs in the past. Ear canal skin is thin and sensitive, and some people react to the materials or surface finishes used in cheaper foam earplugs. The smooth texture of the Yellow Neons – noticeably smoother than many competing products – also reduces friction during insertion and removal, which minimises the chance of irritation even with daily use.

If you have found that earplugs leave your ears feeling itchy or sore, the Yellow Neons are one of the first alternatives I would suggest trying. They are also a good option for anyone who wears earplugs for extended periods – on long-haul flights, night shifts, or during long study sessions – where irritation from prolonged contact becomes more of a factor.

How the Yellow Neons Compare to the Classic

Having both the Classic and the Yellow Neons in the Women’s Earplugs Sample Pack is deliberate. They are close enough in design to feel familiar if you switch between them, but different enough that most people will notice a clear preference. In my experience, people who prioritise maximum noise reduction and a secure fit often prefer the Classic, while those who prioritise all-day comfort and ease of insertion tend to gravitate towards the Yellow Neons. Neither is objectively better – they suit different ears and different use cases.

The bright yellow colour is also worth a mention. It makes the Yellow Neons easy to spot if you drop one, and easy for a supervisor to confirm are being worn correctly in a workplace setting – which is why they are widely used in industrial hearing conservation programmes.

Insertion Tips for Tapered Earplugs

The technique for inserting tapered earplugs is slightly different to cylindrical ones. Because the tip is narrower, you do not need to compress the earplug quite as aggressively – a gentle roll between thumb and forefinger until the tip is smooth and slim is usually enough. As with all foam earplugs, reach over the top of your head with your opposite hand to pull the ear upward and backward before inserting, and hold the earplug in place for around 20 seconds while the foam expands. The tapered shape should feel as though it is being drawn gently into position rather than pushed in – if you find yourself having to force it, try rolling it a little more before reinserting.

My Verdict

The 3M EARsoft Yellow Neons are an outstanding foam earplug. The combination of a higher SNR rating than the Classic, a comfortable tapered shape, hypoallergenic materials and all-day wearability makes them one of the most versatile earplugs in our entire range. If you found the Classic slightly firm or difficult to insert, I would strongly encourage you to compare the two – many people find the Yellow Neons the more comfortable experience from the very first try. Both are included in our Women’s Earplugs Sample Pack and Men’s Earplugs Sample Pack, so you can try them back to back and draw your own conclusions.

Tomorrow I move on to Day 3 and something a little different – the 3M 1100 Foam Earplugs, which take a deliberately firmer approach to foam and suit a specific type of earplug user that the softer options do not always satisfy.
