Bilberry has long been used to aid vision. In fact, a popular story mentions World War 2 RAF pilots who were said to regularly consume bilberry jam in order to improve their vision for night missions! This history has led to further, modern-day research into the uses of bilberry for improved vision.

The bilberry plant is native to the UK and Europe. It  is similar to, but not the same as, the blueberry, which is a plant native to North America. The bilberry fruit is slightly smaller than that of the blueberry with a stronger, fuller taste.

The botanical name for bilberry is Vaccinium Myrtillus. The plant contains anthocyanins (anthocyanosides). These are chemical compounds that have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and they may contribute to the maintenance of eye health. Anthocyanosides may protect both the lens and retina from oxidative damage, as well as reducing the risk of cataracts. Anthocyanins could also contribute to regular  blood circulation and the maintenance of normal retina.

Laboratory studies have shown evidence that bilberry consumption may reduce or reverse some eye disorders. For instance, taking bilberry tablets as a nutritional supplement may help to prevent and treat early-stage macular degeneration (AMD).

Other help benefits that may result from taking bilberry tablets  include:

  • Bilberry may prevent the hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis)
  • May help to treat varicose veins(enlarged veins in the legs).
  • Bilberry contributes to the health of collagen, which helps prevent wrinkles and premature aging of the skin.
  • Good for short term memory
